A General Dentist Offers Advice On Invisalign Treatment

The popularity of clear aligner systems such as Invisalign® has greatly increased over time due to the effectiveness and convenience of the product. When given the choice between traditional metal, ceramic braces, or progressive aligners, many patients choose to learn more about the Invisalign® option to see if it is a viable choice for the issues they are having. One of the advantages of this system is the availability of advice and treatment formulation directly through a general dentist.

Invisalign® treatment advice

The scope of experience for a general dentist expands beyond cleanings, fillings, and dental repair work. If a patient is unhappy with the alignment of the teeth, there are teeth straightening options available through general dentistry practices that are effective, convenient, and patient-friendly.

How does Invisalign® straighten teeth?

Traditional metal or ceramic braces straighten teeth by consistently applying pressure in the direction that places them in correct alignment. Brackets are dentally cemented directly to the teeth and a wire is connected to the brackets using small rubber bands. An orthodontist adjusts these wires to adjust the amount and direction of the pressure.

Invisalign® also straightens the teeth using pressure and movement, but the method is very different. Impressions of each arch are taken and a series of clear aligners are custom-made to fit each patient's mouth exactly. The aligners are worn most hours of the day, applying gentle and consistent pressure to slowly guide each tooth into the correct position. The patient typically switches to a new aligner every two weeks, each one closer to the ideal position.

What are the benefits of aligners over traditional teeth-straightening methods?

Many patients choose Invisalign® for straightening due to the nearly invisible and discreet nature of the system. The trays are thin and clear, making them hardly noticeable when speaking or smiling. Another advantage of this product is the ability to remove the aligner when eating or taking care of dental hygiene needs.

Unlike traditional braces, which require continuous adjustments by an orthodontist, a general dentist can perform all of the processes necessary to get a patient on board with Invisalign®. Follow up appointments consist of progress monitoring and assisting the patient with any questions that arise during the process.

Who is a good candidate for Invisalign®?

Most alignment concerns that can be treated with traditional braces can also be improved with aligner systems, included crowding, overbite, underbite, crossbite, gaps, and crooked teeth. Some more severe issues cannot be treated easily with trays, such as teeth that are severely rotated or gaps that are too large. A consultation with a dentist can let the patient know if using aligners is a viable option. Also, aligners are often only recommended for adolescents and adults as patient compliance is necessary to successfully complete treatment.

Conclusion

The Invisalign® system uses a series of clear aligners to straighten teeth with more discretion and freedom than traditional orthodontics. Patients considering a teeth-straightening system can speak with a general dentist to see if tray aligners can potentially correct alignment concerns.
